The view from my perch on the mountain

Bird Brained

While Sam was working on building up his stamina, chasing cats out of the flowerbeds, I pulled my lawn chair into a patch of sunlight and watched the critters flitting from branch to branch in Burd Town.

This one took brought back happy childhood memories.

What does a woodpecker have to do with my childhood?

Woody Woodpecker cartoons, of course!

Oh I loved ole Woody as a kid too. Cartoons just aren’t what they used to be. *sigh*

That’s a beautiful female Downy you have there!

Sue, we get several species of woodpecker, especially during the winter months. Once the snow starts to fly I’ll have the camera set up on the tripod by the bedroom window and I’m sure I’ll have plenty of opportunities to shoo them as well.

Woodpeckers would peck at the tree outside my bedroom window when I was growing up. I love that sound and every summer one visits the top of my willow tree which is full of dead branches and goes to town pecking for food. They’re loosing their habitat because people trim their trees.

They’re in luck here as the ridge behind our house is heavily wooded and full of dead branches thanks to winter ice damage.

  5. Chip, that’s the sweetest little Downey! Looks like just a youngster, was it? You know, for all my life, I said I was going to move to an island, but after following you for so long………well, those mountains are looking more like home than ever. And shoot, it’s barely a stone’s throw away, lol.
